Submission:
I have been following these hearings in hopes they will shed some light on why our fisheries (both east and west coast) are in such bad shape. The most telling evidence to date has come from Dr. Beamish with his thoroughly unprofessional pro-fish farm attitude.
we cannot solve the problems we’ve created at the same level of thinking we were at when they were created. I sincerely hope Justice Cohen will recognise that senior DFO scientists like Mr. Beamish are not only the root of the problem, they are also, with their yesterday thinking, the biggest roadblock to the recovery of our fisheries.
Also I am concerned about the turn to secrecy this commission has taken. It is supposed to be a “public” inquiry, not a fish farm PR protection initiative. If, in the coarse of this inquiry, they have had to disclose documents that may damage their image then we have the right to see those documents. This our fishery and we are paying for this inquiry, we have the right to know what is going on.
One last thing, if the rumours are true and DFO and the BCSFA have been hiding infectious diseases like ISA from the public, Justice Cohen has a moral obligation to make that information public.
